rugged West Coast.
The M.V. Uchuck III is a 136
foot passenger and freight vessel providing service through historic
Nootka Sound, Esperanza and Kyuquot Sound. Our schedule provides day
and overnight cruises through some of Vancouver Islands most spectacular
scenery.
Come and watch the day to day events of a working coastal
vessel. Explore the shores and waterways of isolated inlets for a variety
of wildlife, including black bears, eagles, sea otters, grey and killer
whales plus much more.
Nootka Sound is rich in history. Captain James Cook was
the first European to enter the Sound in 1778, trading furs with Chief
Maquinna and the Mowachaht people, at Yuquot, better known as Friendly
Cove. Many more explorers and fur traders soon followed.
Between 1778 and 1795 Nootka Sound became one of the most
famous ports on the West Coast of North America. Many of the explorers
left their marks on the waterways and islands of Nootka Sound, such
as Kendrick Arm, Esperanza Inlet and Bligh Island (derived from the
infamous Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty).
Today, the Uchuck III derives her name from the Nootkan
language of the West coast native people meaning Healing Waters.
She has been serving the area for over 40 years.
Built in 1942 as an American Mine Sweeper, she has been totally refitted
to accommodate 100 passengers and up to 100 tons of cargo. With a comfortable
wood finished lounge, coffee shop and upper deck seating, it is the
perfect way to spend a relaxing day on the West Coast. So bring your
camera and binoculars, you never know what surprise might await you
around the corner!
