Cruise historic Nootka Sound, Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Vancouver Island’s rugged West Coast as you cruise its inlets aboard the MV Uchuck III, a 136-foot passenger and freight vessel providing service through historic Nootka, Esperanza and Kyuquot Sounds. Our schedule provides day and overnight cruises through some of Vancouver Island’s most spectacular scenery. Come to watch the day-to-day events of a working coastal vessel, to explore the shores and waterways of isolated inlets, to see a variety of wildlife; black bears, eagles, sea otters, Pacific dolphins, grey and killer whales. Take advantage of the Uchuck’s route to wet launch your kayak at a remote location or to be dropped off at the trail head of of the Nootka Trail. Visit Friendly Cove, home of the Mowachaht people. The first European to land in the Sound was the British Royal Navy’s Captain James Cook who arrived in 1778 on H.M.S. Resolution and there traded furs with Chief Maquinna and the Mowachaht people at Yuquot, now better known as Friendly Cove. Many more explorers and fur traders soon followed and between 1778 and 1795 Nootka Sound became one of the most famous points on the West Coast of North America. Many waterways and islands of the Sound bear names of early explorers: Kendrick Arm, Esperanza Inlet and Bligh Island after the famous, or infamous, Captain Bligh of the Bounty. Experience a working marine vessel in action. The Uchuck III derives her name from the West Coast native Nootkan language “Healing Waters” and has been serving the area for over 50 years. Built originally in Oregon as an American Mine Sweeper in 1942, the MV Uchuck III has been totally refitted to accommodate 100 passengers and up to 100 tons of freight (cargo). Stops are made along her route (as required) at logging camps and settlements in the area to deliver supplies, passengers or to drop off kayakers along our route. The vessel has a comfortable wood-finished lounge, a coffee shop and spacious upper-deck seating, making it the perfect way to explore Vancouver Island’s West Coast! Bring your camera and binoculars: you never know what might await you around the corner!
